According to fourier any signal can be represented by no. of simple oscillatory sine or cosine signals. If we can find out the coefficients of these sine or cosine signals then we can reproduce the original signal. Thus comes the terminology sine Transforms and cosine transforms.
Cosine is generally used for even functions.
Cosine functions are efficient in terms of
1. compression
2. fewer signals are used to construct a signal. Fidelity is better in this case
